GD takes on role in post-shakedown of USS Independence
General Dynamics Bath Iron Works has won a $7.5 million task order with the Navy to provide engineering and management services for the post-shakedown availability of the USS Independence.
General Dynamics Bath Iron Works has won a $7.5 million task order with the U.S. Navy to support the post-shakedown availability for the USS Independence.
The task order, which was awarded under a basic ordering agreement, calls for engineering and management services for advance planning and design.
A post-shakedown is conducted after a new vessel has completed its shakedown cruise. The post-shakedown work focuses on correcting defects found during the cruise.
The USS Independence is one of the Navy's new littoral combat ships.

Under the task order, General Dynamics will provide design, planning and material support services, including program management, advance planning, engineering, design, material kitting, liaison and scheduling, the Defense Department said.
Work will be performed in Bath, Maine, and San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by March 2014.
Funding in the full amount of the order was obligated at the time of the award, and will expire at the end of fiscal 2013.
