GSA cancels cloud request for quotations
Changing markets and technology prompted fresh start on cloud acquisition.
The General Services Administration has canceled a request for quotations (RFQ) for cloud infrastructure as a service, according to reports.
The Dorobek Insider reported that GSA officials had canceled the RFQ, but planned to issue a new one. The agency believes the definition of infrastructure as a service and the market have both changed enough since the RFQ was issued in July 2009 to warrant a fresh approach, according to the report.
Andrea DiMaio, a Gartner Inc. consultant and blogger, wrote in his blog that the move isn't a surprise.
"As I discussed with GSA official[s] last week, as they were thinking about this option, the process has simply taken too long and vendor offerings have evolved since," he wrote. "I do wonder whether the new RFQ will be designed to accommodate also some of the IaaS internal providers (such as NASA or DISA), and whether these agencies will be responding. It is about time that the GSA tackles more explicitly the issue of internal vs. external service providers."
