Michigan Taps Motorola

Motorola Inc. won a $20.2 million contract to upgrade the public safety radio communications system for the state of Michigan with the company's latest two-way radio platform.

The upgrade of the Michigan Public Safety Communications System will be completed by November 2002, the company said.

The company is already refurbishing the communications system in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Once that work is completed, it will improve the remaining sites in the Lower Peninsula.

The upgrade will allow state and local government personnel equipped with radios throughout Michigan to communicate with each other during disasters, emergencies, pursuits and other operations involving multiple jurisdictions. Michigan state and local governments have 8,000 radios that operate on the statewide public safety radio communications system.
