CSC Eyes Pacific Rim Prospects: Computer Sciences Corp., El Segundo, Calif., is exploring acquisition possibilities in the Pacific Rim. CSC, which has averaged about three acquisitions a year since 1986, has bought firms in the consulting arena, among other fields, to bolster its services sector.


The company's last purchase was in May when it acquired American Practice Management, New York, which is known for strategy development in the managed health-care industry.

Providing a Cash Alternative: Amdahl Corp., Sunnyvale, Calif., has formed a SmartCard Group to supply processing systems for the fast-growing electronic cash market around the world. The first product will support the Mondex Global Electronic Cash Program. Developed and backed by several of the world's largest banks, Mondex is now being globally implemented. Its core features add new benefits of convenience and security. It is also the first new payment system in several decades and provides the first true cash alternative.

Major corporations in financial, communications, electronic and retail sectors have supported Mondex. With more than 20,000 banks and more than 10 million retailers around the world who are potential customers for e-cash, banks and retailers will be interested in smart card systems to promote and support loyalty schemes, credit and debit functions and specialized marketing programs such as Mondex, said a SmartCard Group official.

Unisys to Provide Technical Support: Unisys Corp., Blue Bell, Pa., will provide computer operations and related technical support for United Healthcare's Golden Valley, Minn., computer operations. United Healthcare outsourced its operations to consolidate some of its computer operations to a smaller number of operating platforms.

Unisys will transfer a significant portion of United Healthcare's IBM, HP, UNIX and Unisys A-Series enterprise server platforms to the Unisys Outsourcing Eagen Service Center facility located 10 miles away in Eagan, Minn. In early July, 60 United Healthcare employees transferred to Unisys Outsourcing to support these computer operations support services.
