An attorney, Fitzpatrick relocated from Richmond to Washington in 1989 to become executive vice president of Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology, where he led an internal study that eventually resulted in a strategic change of direction for the organization.
In 1992, he became special counsel of the state's Defense Conversion Commission, and in 1993 he officially left the CIT to become a partner in the Washington law firm of Lipsen, Hamberger & Fitzpatrick.
He was an honorary member of the board of the Northern Virginia Technology Council and served as chairman of its technology committee.
Georgetown Hospital's Cardiovascular Research Fund has been designated for memorial contributions. Survivors include his wife and two children of Great Falls.
