A reader opened a new front (or more accurately, re-opened an old one) in the ever-present war between the public and private sectors by commenter questioning the amount of hours feds really put in. The real problem is that the Federal government treats all it's white collar workers as blue collar. Overtime pay and comp time for salaried employees? Huh? How much time is wasted with timecards... and the personnel hired to manage that process?

The whole problem with this debate is something called "saleried exempt". In the private sector you will work overtime for absolutely no compensation whatsoever. No comp time. No overtime pay. No nothing. Feds are bewildered when I do not like the idea of joining them for overtime work. While they enjoy being paid extra or logging hours they can save up and use as an extra week off sometime, I work for nothing but paying the golden parachute for my latest CEO.
