Navmar Applied Sciences wins $48M contract to support UAV

Navmar Applied Sciences Corp. has won a $44.7 million contract with the Navy to support the Copperhead Unmanned Air Systems.

The company will specifically support the Tigershark Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, which has a avionics suite that can provide autonomous waypoint navigation, a VHF command link for manual flight, and can be outfitted with an electro-optic or infrared camera mounted stabilized turret system, according to Navmar’s website.

Under the contract, Navmar will improve sensor and platform capabilities, expand additional detachments and sustain current detachments.  

This contract includes continued improvements of the Tigershark UAV airframe, incorporation of improved sensors, and integration of improved command and control systems to current and future Copperhead platforms, the Defense Department said in a release.

Work will be performed in Afghanistan, Patuxent River, Md., and Yuma, Ariz., and is expected to be completed by December 2014.

Funding in the amount of $21 million is obligated at the time of the award, and will expire at the end of fiscal 2014.
