The Defense Department is expanding a program to share cyber threat information and inviting all of its eligible contractors to take part, Reuters reports.

Fewer than 40 contractors participated in the initial stage of the Defense Industrial Base Cyber Security/Information Assurance Program, a public-private partnership DOD undertook to protect sensitive data it has saved on private computer networks.

The expansion now makes more than 2,000 contractors eligible to join the partnership, which requires participants to be able to safeguard information at the "Secret" classification level and higher.

According to Threat Post, the companies will share information with DOD about their experiences dealing with hackers who have tried to breach their networks.
