L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. will provide secure driver’s licenses and identification documents for Michigan under a nine-year contract valued at $39.8 million.

The award from the Michigan Department of State calls for L-1’s Secure Credentialing Division to centrally produce secure digital driver’s licenses and ID cards that will meet federal credentialing security standards.

The enhanced driver’s licenses (EDLs) will also satisfy federal border crossing requirements under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.

Security technologies used on the cards include ultraviolet inks, banknote printing, and personalized laser-based elements, creating linked and layered security features, L-1 officials said.

“Our new standard and enhanced driver’s licenses and ID cards will be extremely secure, utilizing several state-of-the art features to protect against fraud,” said Terri Lynn Land, Michigan’s secretary of state.

L-1 produces more than 100 million secure credentials and driver’s licenses annually. L-1 is the sole provider of U.S. passport production capabilities and produces the U.S. Passport Card and Border Crossing Card, the officials said.
