L-1 gets California fingerprint work

L-1 Identity Solutions Inc. will help California fingerprint more than 300,000 daycare workers as part of a biometrics-based, criminal-history search initiative.

Under a contract with the California Department of Social Services worth an estimated $17 million over three years, the company's Integrated Biometric Technology division will process applicants for day care licenses and applicants for employment.

The contract's total value is partly revenue from the state and partly fees that people applying for state employment will pay for the fingerprinting services.

California has more than 56,000 licensed daycare facilities. The state requires all workers to have a criminal-record clearance, including fingerprints.
According to L-1, its IBT division processes nearly 1 million applicants' prints a year and maintains 50 facilities in California. The electronic process allows results to come back in days rather than months.
