EMC to acquire Document Sciences

EMC Corp. will acquire Document Sciences Corp. for $85 million in an all-cash deal.

EMC Corp. will acquire Document Sciences Corp. under an agreement the two companies announced today. EMC will pay about $85 million in cash to buy the company, which develops document-management software.

EMC expects the acquisition to strengthen its position in the transactional content-management marketplace, according to the company's announcement.

The companies still have to get approval from Document Sciences' shareholders and from regulatory bodies. Assuming all the approvals are granted, they expect to conclude the acquisition in the first quarter of 2008.

Document Sciences' chief product line, called xPression, allows users to automate the creation and delivery of printed materials, including contracts, policy statements, marketing materials and correspondence.

EMC plans to operate Document Sciences Corp. as a business unit within its Content Management and Archiving division.
