Jerry Edgerton, former president of Verizon Federal, has joined the board of directors at Command Information Inc., a provider of IPv6 technologies.

IPv6 will form the basis of the next generation of the Internet. Compared to the version currently in use, IPv4, the newer version offers a vastly greater number of unique IP addresses, along with new security features and other improvements. Federal agencies are under a mandate to upgrade their Internet backbones to IPv6 by 2008.

Edgerton headed the federal division of MCI, which became Verizon Federal after the 2005 merger of the companies. Susan Zeleniak has taken Edgerton's place at Verizon.

"IPv6 is changing the way the government and telecommunication companies operate and Command Information is at the forefront enabling companies and federal agencies with real solutions that harness the technical and financial benefits of this emerging technology platform," Edgerton said.

Tom Patterson, chief executive officer at Command Information, said the March award of the Networx Universal contracts and the upcoming Networx Enterprise awards make the timing good to bring a seasoned federal telecommunications professional into the company's fold.
