Indiana names Weaver CIO

As of Dec. 1, Indiana CIO Karl Browning will become the state's new Transportation Department commissioner and current state chief technology officer Gerry Weaver will step into Browning's post as CIO.

The job shifts, announced earlier this month by Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels, were needed after current Transportation Department Commissioner Tom Sharp resigned.

Sharp, Browning and Weaver all joined Indiana's government when Gov. Daniels took office in January 2005.

Weaver, in his role as CTO, was responsible for the consolidation of all infrastructure services across agencies in Indiana's state government, creating a single statewide service organization.

The new CIO also led the state's contract negotiations with all IT vendors. Those contracting initiatives have saved the state more than $25 million in annual savings, according to a statement from Daniels.

Before joining Indiana's government, Weaver was an executive at EDS Corp., Plano, Texas, and General Motors Corp., Detroit, Mich. Weaver has an undergraduate degree in economics and mathematics from the University of Wisconsin.

Browning is a veteran of two Ross Perot companies, EDS and Perot Systems Corp., Plano, Texas. More recently he was senior vice president and CIO for Golden Rule Insurance Co., Lawrenceville, Ill.
