Aviel snares U.S. Geological Survey IT security deal

Aviel Systems Inc. won a task order to deliver IT services to the Interior Department's U.S. Geological Survey Geospatial Information Office.

The Mclean, Va., company will furnish IT security assistance to meet Federal Information System Management Act requirements. FISMA was enacted to strengthen computer and network security of the federal government.

Performance Management Consulting, a unit of Aviel, will perform the work under a four-year contract worth $730,000. The company's key subcontractor on the project is Computer Security Consulting Inc.

The contract also calls for completing work required for the certification and accreditation of the agency's Enterprise Web Enclave. This initiative consists of public Web and database servers organized into 20 sites located throughout the United States.

The U.S. Geological Survey is a new customer for Aviel, said R. John Chapel, Aviel's chairman, CEO and president, in a statement announcing the deal.

"We look forward to assisting the agency with this certification and accreditation process, which will help define measures of performance used to assure adequate IT system security controls are implemented and tested, risks are assessed, and security plans are maintained," Chapel said.
