The Veterans Affairs Department has hired PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP of New York to scrutinize its troubled financial management project.

The firm will take four months to evaluate the Core Financial and Logistics System, department CIO Robert McFarland said.

It then will suggest what it would take to remove the material weaknesses in the agency's financial systems and how to proceed with the CoreFLS project.

CoreFLS, developed by BearingPoint Inc., McLean, Va., suffered data conversion and interface problems, some of which led to substandard patient care and services at the VA hospital, according to inspector general findings.
