Convera wins In-Q-Tel funding

Search and categorization software provider Convera Corp. was awarded about $800,000 by the CIA's venture capital fund to expedite the development of distributed indexing capability.

Search and categorization software provider Convera Corp. was awarded about $800,000 by a group affiliated with the CIA to expedite the development of distributed indexing capability, Convera officials said.

In-Q-Tel, a private venture group funded by the CIA, expects Convera of Vienna, Va., to continue developing search solutions that enable the intelligence community to extract very specific details from massive terabytes of incoming data. The technology can be used to quickly index and search for potential terrorist information. The $800,000 award is part of a potential $1.4 million contract Convera has with In-Q-Tel.

In the past, In-Q-Tel has funded development of Convera's enterprise search platform RetrievalWare, Convera officials said. Convera is modifying RetrievalWare to automatically index information contained within hundreds of databases.

In October, the FBI selected RetrievalWare as a search and categorization platform within the agency's new Investigative Data Warehouse. The initial value of that deployment was about $1.5 million, Convera officials said.

Convera has worked with 250 government agencies and more than 100 worldwide intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
