Kerry suggests merger

Sen. John Kerry, (D-Mass.) the Democratic presidential candidate, proposed combining the Commerce Department's Technology Administration with the National Telecommunications and Information Administration for more efficient operations.

The idea of combining these agencies is not new. Last year, Commerce Secretary Donald Evans proposed merging the two technology administrations with the e-commerce policy function of the International Trade Administration. Congress rejected the proposal during the fiscal 2004 appropriations process.
