Fingerprints are best match

The best computerized fingerprint systems are far more accurate than the best face recognition systems, the National Institute of Standards and Technology concluded after testing 34 systems on 48,000 sets of prints.

Fingerprint systems topping 98 percent accuracy rates came from Cogent Systems Inc., Alhambra, Calif.; NEC Technologies Inc., Itasca, Ill.; and Sagem Morpho Inc., Tacoma, Wash.

In similar tests in 2002, the most accurate facial-recognition systems tested had accuracy rates of 71.5 percent.
