SGI commits to 10 gig

	Mountain View, Calif.-based Silicon Graphics Inc., in a bid to raise its profile further in high-performance computing, said it will incorporate 10-gigabit Ethernet connectivity across its servers, workstations and storage systems. The high-speed interconnect will help research labs better process large data sets.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Silicon Graphics Inc., in a bid to raise its profile further in high-performance computing, said it will incorporate 10-gigabit Ethernet connectivity across its servers, workstations and storage systems. The high-speed interconnect will help research labs better process large data sets.

An official in NASA's Advanced Supercomputing Division said faster connections are necessary for keeping pace with today's supercomputing applications. One NASA ocean simulation program churns out data sets as large as 2 terabytes. Currently, SGI's Altix and Origin servers, Onyx and Tezro workstations, and InfiniteStorage network-attached storage solutions come with 10-Gb Ethernet connections.
