DHS creates visualization center

The Homeland Security Department created a National Visual Analytics Center that will research and develop new tools and methods that the department will use to manage, visually represent and analyze enormous amounts of information.

The new center will be led by the Energy Department's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in Richland, Wash. The lab employs 3,800 people and has a $600 million annual budget. The center will not gather data but will develop tools to evaluate in new ways the information used by counterterrorism analysts.
