SAIC grabs professional services firm

Science Applications International Corp. has acquired Aquidneck Management Associates Ltd., a Newport, R.I., professional services company.

Science Applications International Corp. of San Diego has acquired Newport, R.I.-based Aquidneck Management Associates Ltd., which provides professional services to various federal and state agencies. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Privately held AMA will join SAIC's Naval and Maritime Solutions Business Unit and remain in Newport.

"AMA is an important small business contractor in our marketplace," said David Stanford, SAIC senior vice president and manager of the Naval and Maritime Solutions Business Unit. "This acquisition can help us strengthen our position as a principal provider of products and services to our customers within our business community."

AMA was founded in 1981 and has offices in Newport and Albany, N.Y. The company has 275 employees who provide products and services in undersea warfare technology development, program management, systems engineering and information technology solutions.

After Sept. 11, the company established a homeland security consulting practice and conducted war games for the government to assess preparations for future attacks.

AMA's customer list includes the Defense and Transportation departments, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Coast Guard and others. AMA was represented by the investment bank Minuteman Ventures LLC of Burlington, Mass.

SAIC reported $5.9 billion in revenue for its fiscal 2003. The company ranked No. 3 on Washington Technology's 2003 Top 100 list, which measures federal contracting revenue.
