Johnson Controls Inc. won a contract from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to provide security and monitoring for water resources.

Johnson Controls Inc. won a contract from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to provide security and monitoring for the water resources serving the district's 5,200-square-mile service area, the company announced this week.

The water district is a cooperative of 26 public agencies that provide drinking water to nearly 18 million people in parts of Los Angeles, Orange, San Diego, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.

Under the terms of the contract, valued at approximately $9.5 million, Johnson Controls will work with the district and TRC-Security Consulting to design the security solution for more than 60 sites. An access control system with several hundred readers and cameras, digital closed-circuit television recording and software, and wireless closed-circuit TV will be installed to help monitor the sites. The contract includes a five-year service agreement to ensure continued upkeep.

"We are thrilled to have been selected by the Metropolitan Water District to provide security and monitoring for its infrastructure," said Pat Young, Johnson Control's vice president and general manager of fire and security solutions. "The district is the largest agency of its kind in the United States, and a leader in terms of best practices for all its operations."

Headquartered in Milwaukee, Johnson Controls reported revenue of $22.6 billion for fiscal 2003. The company employs 111,000 people and has more than 80 subsidiaries worldwide, according to Hoover's Online.
