Florida taps ACS to operate truck permitting office

Affiliated Computer Services Inc. has won a five-year, $4.7 million contract to operate Florida's permitting office for oversize and overweight trucks.

Affiliated Computer Services Inc. has won a five-year, $4.7 million contract from the Florida Transportation Department to operate the state's permitting office for oversize and overweight trucks, the company announced this week.

Under the contract, ACS of Dallas will staff and operate Florida's permitting office in Tallahassee. The office serves Florida's 3,600 trucking companies that require special permits for oversize or overweight loads. The state office also issues regional permits for multistate trips.

The contract will allow the state to maintain and improve its service delivery to trucking customers in the face of dwindling resources while ensuring state oversight for the safe use of Florida's highway system, said Sharon Holmes, chief highway engineer for the department.

ACS is a provider of business process outsourcing and information technology outsourcing to commercial and government customers. The company has about 40,000 employees and annual sales of $3 billion.
