That, in effect, was the message Rear Adm. Charles Munns had for would-be contractors on the Navy-Marine Corps Intranet program. Despite startup problems, the program will add 130,000 seats before the end of the summer, for a total of 210,000, Munns said at the first annual NMCI Symposium here.
Plus, Munns said, new contractors are being added in four areas related to NMCI:
The Electronic Data Systems Corp. contract itself requires subcontractors for new services. For example, Nextel will join the catalog for wireless telecom products.Functional application areas. The 24 managers of application areas in the Navy are responsible for winnowing down the nearly overwhelming number of legacy applications EDS and the Navy first encountered when planning the cutover to NMCI. This a place for companies to help make the survivors fit the NMCI operating and security environments, Munns said.Site activities. Before applications are loaded, "do we have the licenses? The media? The security? There's a huge effort to migrate apps off of quarantined PCs," Munns said, referring to machines users still need but cannot be connected to NMCI.Legacy networks. "This has the most potential," Munns said. The Navy and EDS are embarked on a campaign to consolidate servers, migrate functions to new servers, and develop portals and ERP applications.
