TranTech Inc., Alexandra, Va., won a $9 million contract from the Defense Department to supply a multi-terabyte digital materials archiving system, the company announced today.

The system, which can store and process multimedia data, will be made available to all federal agencies through the American Forces Information Service.

TranTech will deliver a solution that will hold 20 terabytes of data, and will eventually be able to hold over 100 terabytes. A terabyte is approximately 1,024 gigabytes. It will be able to capture, edit, index, store and search digital images, video, audio and text documents.

The company expects to deliver the system in early 2004. It is based on the sharable content object reference model, or SCORM, the Defense Department standard for multimedia assets.

TranTech specializes in providing enterprise workflow, data warehousing, business intelligence, knowledge management, portal management and information assurance services and solutions. With about 200 employees, the privately-owned company is certified as a small disadvantaged business by the Small Business Administration.
