Sony Corp., Tokyo, is shipping what it claims to be the first backup tape that holds more than 1 terabyte of data. Using a new format called Super Advanced Intelligent Tape, or SAIT, the tape can store up to 1.3 terabytes of compressed data, more than twice the amount of current formats. SAIT drives will fit into existing 5.25 inch slots now used by tape drive libraries.
