A poorly designed intranet can cost an organization dearly in productivity, according to a study from the Nielsen Norman Group, Fremont, Calif.
The study, "Designing Usable Intranets," found that a poorly designed internal network serving 10,000 employees could cost an organization up to $15 million per year. The IT usability research firm examined how 14 corporate intranets were used on a daily basis. It found that employees spent excess time searching poorly indexed content, navigating through inconsistently designed departmental pages and grappling with documents, such as employee handbooks, needlessly converted into PDF.
