Raytheon To Upgrade Navy Missiles
Raytheon Systems Co., a unit of Raytheon Co., Lexington, Mass., received a $22.4 million Navy contract to begin production of Phalanx Block 1B Surface Mode ordnance alteration kits.

Designed and produced by Raytheon at its facility in Tucson, Ariz., Phalanx is a rapid-fire, computer-controlled radar and gun system that automatically acquires, tracks and destroys enemy threats that have penetrated all other ship defense systems.

The upgrade has the capability to engage, day or night, small surface craft or low-speed aircraft and increases the range at which maneuvering anti-ship missiles are destroyed. Phalanx has been deployed on nearly all Navy ships and is in the navies of 20 allied nations.

Opal Technologies Wins Navy BPA
Computer manufacturer Opal Technologies, Columbia, Md., won a Navy blanket purchase agreement worth $20 million to $40 million.

The agreement will allow the company to sell more of its desktops, file servers, parts and peripherals to the government market. The company has been predominately focused on the commercial market with clients such as CompUSA, Erol's Internet and Johns Hopkins University. It also holds an exclusive contract with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore.

Acton Burnell To Develop Air Force Data Models
Alexandria, Va.-based Acton Burnell Inc. won a $641,000 contract to develop IDEFIX data models for the Air Force Air Education Training Command in San Antonio.

The 12-month project continues the company's work in developing standard data elements for the Defense Department training community. The project includes reverse engineering of data requirements, mapping of data elements to the Defense Data Dictionary System and preparing developmental standard data elements.

Muller Media To Provide Storage System to NARA
The National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Md., selected Muller Media Conversions, New York, to provide software support and enhancement services for its archival preservation systems. The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract covers up to five years of such services.

MMC has so far received about $30,000 in task orders and expects more as time progresses. The original five-year contract begun in 1992 resulted in more than $1 million in revenue.

APS Systems transfer millions of the nation's important electronic records in the form of government computer tapes and disks to more stable and standardized storage media. The contract will include functional enhancement, support for new tape and disk devices, and assurance of year 2000 compliance.

DRS Technologies To Produce Display Systems
DRS Technologies Inc., Parsippany, N.J., is part of a team that won a seven-year contract worth at least $281 million to produce advanced display systems for the Navy. Lockheed Martin Corp. and Raytheon Co. are the other team members.

The AN/UYQ-70 systems will be installed on surface ships, submarines and aircraft in the Navy fleet. The system integrates the latest commercial computing technology for combat, command and control applications. The design provides flexible display and computing infrastructure for Navy and other Defense Department customers to accommodate new combat system development or the retrofit of existing systems.

The company also won a $4 million contract from Northrop Grumman Corp.'s Electronics and Systems Integration Division to provide more aircraft wire harnesses, cable assemblies, panel boxes and related equipment for two of the Air Force's E-8C aircraft under the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System.
