Engineers Should Improve Their Writing, Too

Regarding the letter by Theodore Fawcett on Jazz Up Your Writing (WT, Jan. 23): You would have loved the systems integration course I took at George Mason University two summers ago. It was the first such course under close supervision of Andrew Sage, dean of the Systems Engineering department.

Among the course themes were that engineers are trained too narrowly - systems integration techniques help you find out the showstoppers (e.g. explain your program to Congress) that are needed for success.

Technology was defined in a consistent, pragmatic way using Venn diagrams.

We engineers have to learn to "communicate with a wallop." There is a big world out there that won't come to us and use our lingo.

There's More Than One Cisco Reseller

Some of the information provided in the letter to the editor titled "Cisco on the Rise" (WT, Feb. 20) is perhaps misleading. Comstor may be "the exclusive [2-tier] distributor of Cisco's Enterprise products into the federal marketplace," as Mr. Snyder claims; however, there are other resellers of these same products.

ViON Corp. has a contract with Cisco to provide their enterprise products to the federal government. We are, in fact, the exclusive provider of the Enterprise Network Processor, a package offering of hardware, software and support services for the enterprise customer.
