A request for proposals for a Virtual Data Center Services Contract has been released. The General Services Administration's Federal Systems and Integration Management Center, or FEDSIM, and the Federal Computer Acquisition Center, or FEDCAC, are calling for proposals that would allow agencies to outsource data processing requirements to commercial companies. GSA estimates the value of the 10-year contract between $2 billion and $3 billion. The contract will be awarded in April 1997. The service, which is voluntary for federal, state and local agencies, will include services from Digital Equipment Corp., Maynard, Mass., and Unisys, Blue Bell, Pa. Federal agencies now spend about $2 billion annually on data operations.

The French task force is investigating two rings of fashion thieves, but does not have a clear idea how to stop the thefts. If they find the culprits, they can impose two-year jail terms and heavy fines.
