Nearly 1,300 Northern States Power Co. employees in five states began using a newly minted customer service system developed and implemented by a joint NSP Andersen Consulting Team. The implementation makes NSP among the first major utility companies to install a customer service system completely on a client/server technical platform. The client/server system is designed to make billing information on its 1.8 million customers more readily available. About 2 million customer inquiries each year will be handled more efficiently.

With estimated revenue of $60 million annually, the new unit will combine the operations of its newly acquired companies with the education division of PLATINUM Technology Inc.


Nexar Technologies Inc., a relative newcomer to the PC manufacturing business, has struck a deal with Wang to provide support for Nexar's growing line of customizable and upgradeable computers. Nexar has already hatched distribution deals with General Services Administration heavyweight Government Technology Services Inc. and Ingram Micro. For its part, Wang will also provide telephone software support for Microsoft products bundled with Nexar systems.

The Global Development Centre, a software development unit inside SHL Systemhouse headquarters, Ottawa, Canada, has added Sun Microsystems Inc.'s Java technology to its expanding application development efforts. The integrator expects Java to help jump-start its development efforts beyond the client/server market.

Booz-Allen &amp Hamilton Inc. of McLean, Va., has been awarded a four-year contract worth up to $25 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to provide a range of consulting services. Booz-Allen will provide resource management, organizational structure, budget analysis, business process improvement and staff development and training.
