Gignoux acquired Data Measurement, his third company, in the 1970s and took it public in 1981. A manufacturer of industrial high-performance measurement and control systems, the company was one of the first in the United States to achieve ISO 9001 certification. With subsidiaries in France, China, Germany and the United Kingdom, and more than 45 sales offices around the globe, the company had a worldwide customer base in the steel, copper, paper, plastics and rubber industries.

Ironically, the acquisition of Data Measurement by Measurex Corp. was scheduled to be completed on Jan. 9, the day of Gignoux's funeral, but weather conditions delayed the closing by a day. Shares of the NYSE company had quadrupled during the past year.

A native of Grenoble, France, Gignoux was educated at the Ecole Normale Superieure and later earned a master's degree in economics from Harvard. He is survived by his wife Monique of Bethesda, two daughters and a son.
