B>DEAL of the fortnight
The eagerly anticipated TAC-4 procurement has come down, and will go to Hewlett-Packard Co. of Palo Alto, Calif. The U.S. Navy says the contract is potentially worth $672.6 million. On its team are Science Applications International Corp., San Diego; and Harris Corp., Melbourne, Fla. SAIC is the systems integrator, and Harris will perform the information security functions.

DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Mobil Corp. of Fairfax, Va. was awarded a $35.9 million contract from the U.S. Navy to provide supplies and services.

Mitre Corp.'s Center for Information Systems located in McLean, Va., won a $30.6 million contract from the U.S. Navy for robotic arms.

The U.S. Navy has awarded a contract potentially worth $9 million to Hughes Aircraft Company to supply radar processor systems to be used at U.S. Coast Guard shore-based vessel traffic service facilities around the nation.

Advanced Engineering and Research Associates Inc. of Arlington, Va., won a five-year, $8 million contract from the U.S. Marine Corps Systems Command to develop an operational combat vehicle.

Mantech Services Corp. of Fairfax, Va., won a contract from the U.S. Navy valued at $4.26 million for instruments and laboratory equipment.

Computer Sciences Corp., El Segundo, Calif., has won part of a $157 million deal to provide technical services to the U. S. Army Information Systems Command. The major contractor is SAIC.

The U.S. Air Force awarded Unisys Corp. of McLean, Va., a contract valued at $2.1 million for hardware and software maintenance on automated digital weather switches.

Cybermotion Inc. of Salem, Va., has won three government-related contracts totaling $1 million. The most recent from the U.S. Army will lead to a robotic platform that will, in addition to its normal fire and intrusion capabilities, perform an inventory check as it patrols government warehouses.

GENERAL GOVERNMENT
Dynamic Resources of Alexandria, Va., won a contract valued at $400,000 from the Food and Drug Administration to implement a prototype of a UNIX-based document imaging system to track resumes.

INTernational
GRC International Inc., Vienna, Va., said Jan. 23 it formed partnerships with five international materials testing equipment manufacturers, including EnduraTec Systems of Eden Prairie, Minn., two German, one Dutch and one Chinese firm. Materials testing equipment is used by the medical, consumer products, aerospace and car industries.

Hughes Aircraft Co. beat out rival Martin Marietta Corp. for a $700 million contract from India-based Afro-Asian Satellite Communications Ltd. to set up mobile phone service in Africa and parts of Asia. The contract is the first in the world to privide regional high-volume calling service to hand-held phones.

The Hughes system is regional, but will compete for the same business as low-Earth-orbit satellite

offerings as Loral Corp.'s Globalstar partnership, the Iridium Inc. project led by Motorola, and TRW Inc.'s Odyssey system.

OTHER
Kodak of Rochester, N.Y., has reached an agreement on a five-year contract with Northern Telecom to install more than 1,200 copiers and printers worldwide. The agreement is expected to generate up to $10 million per year for Kodak over the next five years.
