Sometimes, amid the noise, shuffling and haste of document management, networked solutions, seamless interoperability and so on, it's nice to find a technology that, well, means something on a little higher plane. And so we bring you this belated Sept. 7 announcement from DRT Manufacturing Company Inc. of Rockville, Md.: "DRT manufacturing company announces that for the first time ever, a totally non-electrical, kosher, Fluidic Sound System was used in an Orthodox synagogue for religious services to augment the voices of the rabbi and the cantor. "A prohibition on the use of electrical sound systems left the rabbi in a quandary that could only be solved with the DRT system. The only existing prototype system, comprising of two inputs, one for the rabbi and one for the cantor, and two sets of outputs to provide voice augmentation to the overflow crowds on the men's and women's sides, each located over 30 feet away from the signal processor... was installed at the Hampton Synagogue in Westhampton Beach, Long Island...and will be used for the Yom Kippur services....The fluidic sound system, based on the non-electrical, lightweight, high-amplitude acoustic generation technology that DRT has successfully developed for the active cancellation of machinery vibration, is made up of acousto-fluidic amplifiers that amplify the sound pneumatically while preserving the original sound." The system, DRT adds, was approved in 1993 for use in synagogues by the Rabbinical Council of America. Call Dr. Ted Drzwiecki at (301) 762-3077 for more information.

COME FLYAWAY IN MY DURABLE BALLOON
Westinghouse announced its Sentinel 1000 airship completed its first 24-hour unrefueled flight late in August. The dirigible will be used to perform low-cost, long-endurance surveillance. (Packed with sophisticated tracking and radar equipment, some blimps are now stationed along the U.S. border and coastal area to monitor illegal drug trafficking and other unauthorized crossing.) The Sentinel 1000 can fly at an altitude of about 1,500 feet at air speeds up to 35 knots. It requires a crew of four people. In its test flight along North Carolina's Outer Banks, it used 4.9 gallons of fuel an hour, leaving with a full 246-gallon tank and returning with 129 gallons. The 220-foot, helium-filled Sentinel 1000 is the world's largest airship.
