L-3 completes $210M purchase of optics provider

Acquired firm specializes in submarine photonics systems, visual-landing aids, electro-optical and sensor-cueing systems.

L-3 Communications Corp. has completed its $210 million acquisition of the Kollmorgen Electro-Optical unit of Danaher Corp.

The acquired business will be known as L-3 KEO, according to a Feb. 8 company announcement.

The acquired company, based in Northampton, Mass., develops and manufactures specialized equipment, including submarine photonics systems and periscopes, ship-fire control systems, visual landing aids, ground electro-optical and sensor-cueing systems. 

L-3 Communications is a prime contractor in Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance systems, aircraft modernization and maintenance, and government services.

The company, which also is a leading provider of a broad range of electronic systems used on military and commercial platforms, reported 2011 sales of $15.2 billion.

L-3 Communications Corp., of McLean, Va., ranks No. 8 on Washington Technology’s 2011 Top 100 list of the largest federal government contractors.
