Serco boosts air traffic management in U.S., Pacific region

Serco Inc. will support the Federal Aviation Administration under a five-year contract worth approximately $170 million.

The award calls for the government provider of technology and management services to assist the FAA Contract Tower Program by providing air traffic control services at 64 sites in the United States and the Pacific region.

Serco has managed approximately 55 towers since 1994, but as a result of the contract, the company’s responsibilities will expand to sites across the western United States and Alaska, including new Pacific Ocean locations in Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.

The company will provide air traffic control services in the tower to support the safety of incoming and outgoing aircraft, improve the efficiency of air traffic and provide information and support to the pilots, according to a company announcement today.

As part of Serco Group, one of the largest contracted providers of Air Navigation Services worldwide, the company is responsible for more than 960,000 miles of airspace and handles more than 6 million aircraft movements a year.

Serco employs more than 700 air traffic control specialists at more than 75 airports in the United States, United Kingdom and and Middle East.

Serco Inc., of Reston, Va., ranks No. 28 on Washington Technology’s 2009 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
