Alion to assist Navy with ship software development

Alion Science and Technology Corp. will provide information technology and software development to the Navy under a five-year contract worth $31 million.

The contract calls for the employee-owned technology provider to assist the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division, in supporting Navy ship design programs.

Alion will help the organization expand its Advanced Ship and Submarine Evaluation Tool software, which the Navy uses to evaluate the feasibility of ship designs. The company will also enhance the center's Leading Edge Architecture for Prototyping Systems, an integrated modeling and simulation application.

The work will be performed primarily in Carderock, Md., and includes providing technical support for integrated design, early-state design software, engineering, and product data acquisition and integration, said Kenneth Siegman, senior vice president and manager of Alion's Maritime and Industrial Engineering Group.

"We will develop standardized tools and processes for ship design, which can help the Navy realize a reduction in time and cost to transition these designs into their next stages," he added.

Alion's subcontractors are AMSEC, the Columbia Group, BMT Designers and Planners, Computer Sciences Corp.'s Advanced Marine Center, ICI Services, and Science Applications International Corp.

Alion, of McLean, Va., ranks No. 31 on Washington Technology's 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
