VMware CEO Greene ousted; Maritz is new leader

A new president and CEO has been installed at VMware after the departure of Diane Greene, one of the company's co-founders.

Paul Maritz was appointed to be the company's new leader by VMware's board of directors. Maritz was also named a board member.

Maritz was part of the core executive leadership at Microsoft Corp., according to Vmware officials. He spent 14 years at the software giant and retired in 2000.

While with the software giant, Maritz managed the development and marketing of major products, including releases of Windows 95 and Windows NT.

In 2003, Maritz founded Pi Corp., a startup software company focused on building cloud-based solutions for new ways of doing personal information management. Pi Corp. was acquired by EMC in February, and Maritz became president of the EMC Cloud Division.

VMware is based in Palo Alto, Calif.
