IBM to assist DARPA with translation apps

IBM Corp. will conduct research on language-processing applications for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency under a $9.4 million contract.

IBM will focus on language-processing applications such as translation and distillation, the Defense Department said June 23.

Big Blue will conduct the work at various locations in the United States, DOD said. The work is expected to be completed by June 19, 2009.

The contract was awarded in response to a broad agency announcement issued by DARPA's Information Technology Processing Office June 21, 2007. The work is associated with DARPA's Information Processing Techniques Office's broad research agenda related to cognitive systems.

IBM ranks No. 16 on Washington Technology's 2008 Top 100 list of the largest federal government prime contractors.
