Duocommun to help guard U.S. waterways

Duocommun Inc. will deliver security solutions for facilities located on U.S. waterways under a five-year, $21 million Army contract.

Under the contract, the company's Miltec subsidiary will develop, demonstrate and implement security solutions for waterway facilities, Duocommun said in a news release.

The contract for the WaterWATCH program, as the initiative is called, was awarded by the Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development and Engineering Center. Part of the center's mission is to bring various technologies to bear on priority matters such as homeland security.

The work on the WaterWATCH program is at the vanguard of Duocommun's efforts to expand into the homeland security arena, said Joseph Berenato, Duocommun's chairman and chief executive officer. "We intend to seek other applications for Miltec's technology and products" at the Defense and Homeland Security departments, he said.

Miltec, of Huntsville, Ala., specializes in design, development, integration and testing for missiles, space, sensors and simulation. Duocommun is based in Carlsbad, Calif.
