L-1 unit snags DOD biometrics deal

SecuriMetrics, a subsidiary of L-1 Identity Solutions Inc., could earn up to $71 million from a Defense Department contract for the sale of biometric recognition devices.

The contract, from the Army's Space Program Office, comes with an initial task order worth $23.7 million.

SecuriMetrics will begin shipping the Handheld Interagency Identity Detection Equipment devices and related software before its current quarter ends June 30, the company said.

The first task order was larger than L-1 expected, said Robert LaPenta, the company's chairman, president and chief executive officer.

L1 of Stamford, Conn., provides biometric solutions to the government and commercial sectors.
