New York taps Gateway for computer hardware

Gateway Inc. has won a six-month, $25 million contract from the state of New York to provide computers to state agencies, local governments and political offices, the company announced this week.

Terms of the deal call for Gateway of Irvine, Calif., to provide business-class desktops and notebooks, lightweight notebooks and display monitors.

New York state universities, school districts and constitutional officers also can participate in the agreement, which could see Gateway sell as many as 21,000 units, company officials said.

The New York deal follows Gateway's agreement with the state of California, announced in July, to provide desktops, notebooks and monitors for three years. The dollar value of the California deal was not disclosed.

The company adds New York to its roster of government customers, which includes the Air Force, state of California, the Defense Logistics Agency and the University of Arizona.

Gateway, a provider of computer products and related services, has 1,900 employees and annual sales of $3.6 billion, according to Hoover's Online of Austin, Texas.
