General Dynamics wins submarine work

General Dynamics Corp. won a $44.6 million contract modification from the Naval Sea Systems Command to support a system for submarines to processing underwater data, the company said yesterday.

The Multipurpose Processor Program is a hardware and software system that enables submarines to process data collected by towed and hull arrays. The processed data provides information about the location of nearby vessels and increases the submarines' survivability and lethality.

Under the contract modification, General Dynamics' advanced information systems division of Arlington, Va., will provide services and associated materials for the design and development of upgrades, systems support and production of the system. The work will be performed in Fairfax, Va., and Anaheim, Calif., and is expected to be completed by December.

The Navy awarded the original contract to Digital Systems Resources Inc. in 2003. General Dynamics acquired the company and incorporated it into its advanced information systems division in September 2003. The contract's total value, including the modification, is $88.6 million.

Headquartered in Falls Church, Va., General Dynamics has 70,200 employees and had 2004 revenue of $19.2 billion. It is No. 6 on Washington Technology's 2004 Top 100 list of prime government contractors.
