Creator of first Census Web site to retire

After more than 30 years in government, longtime IT and e-government stalwart Valerie Gregg is retiring.

Gregg, the National Science Foundation's program manager for digital archiving and long-term preservation of federal records, will call it quits Jan. 31. Larry Brandt, another program manager in the NSF Systems in Context Cluster, will manage the program after Gregg leaves.

Gregg has been with NSF for the last eight years and spent 22 years before that with the Census Bureau. She led a team that built Census' first Web site in 1994.

At NSF, she helped promote emerging technology by creating partnerships with academic researchers, government agencies and vendors. She led the digital government research program, which provides the academic community with resources and access to real-world government challenges and federal managers with innovative IT.

"The interdisciplinary nature of the digital government projects has truly broadened the reach and impact of this work," Gregg said in a letter announcing her retirement.

Additionally, Gregg has worked with the federal Interagency Council for Statistical Policy. The group designed and manages the http://www.fedstats.gov FedStats portal. She also is the vice-chairwoman of the FedStats R&D working group.
