North Carolina taps ACS for Medicaid system

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services plans to award a five-year, $171 million contract to Affiliated Computer Services Inc. for a new Medicaid system, the company announced today.

ACS of Dallas will operate the North Carolina Medicaid Management Information System, replacing the existing 27-year-old system with one that is more efficient and features re-engineered processes.

The new system will process more than 90 million annual claims for Medicaid and mental health programs, as well as claims for public health and Division of Facility Services programs.

ACS' proposed solution incorporates advanced technology, operational best practices and cost containment program solutions, said Harvey Braswell, group president of ACS' State Healthcare Solutions.

These solutions are designed to minimize the state's health care program expenditures and improve operational efficiency and responsiveness to providers, recipients and other program stakeholders, he said.

To support the contract, ACS will expand its call center in Henderson, N.C., and open a new office in Raleigh, N.C.

ACS offers business process and information technology services to government and commercial customers. The company has more than 40,000 employees and annual sales of $3.7 billion.
