Government contractors, leaders honored

The high society of government contracting honored the best of its own Oct. 16 at the inaugural dinner of the Greater Washington Government Contractor Awards.

Three companies were named contractors of the year:

Computer & Hi-tech Management Inc., Virginia Beach. Va., received the small contractor award for companies with less than $100 million in annual revenue.

RS Information Systems Inc., McLean, Va., won the mid-sized contractor award for companies with $100 million to $500 million in revenue.

Booz Allen Hamilton Inc., also of McLean, was named the large contractor of the year.

The ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton Tysons Corner hotel in McLean was standing-room only as Joseph Kampf, president and chief executive officer of Anteon International Corp., Fairfax, Va., received the award for executive of the year.

Lee Evey, manager of the Pentagon renovation project, was named public-sector partner of the year.

Philip Odeen, former chairman of TRW Inc., was the first person inducted into the Government Contractors Hall of Fame.

Michael Laphen, president and chief operating officer of Computer Sciences Corp., accepted the People's Choice Award for transaction of the year, selected for the company's acquisition of DynCorp in March.

Laphen brought a touch of solemnity to the proceedings when he accepted the award, asking the audience to honor the memories of three employees who died Oct. 15 in an attack on a U.S. embassy van in the Gaza Strip.

The Northern Virginia Government Contractors Council, the Professional Services Council and Washington Technology magazine hosted the event.
