AT&T Corp. won approval from the Defense Department to compete with Sprint Communications Corp. and WorldCom Inc. for telecommunications services under the FTS2001 contract.

Sprint and WorldCom were the original winners of the General Services Administration's FTS2001 contract when it was awarded three years ago. But under "crossover" provisions, companies that hold a Metropolitan Area Acquisition contract for local services can be added to the contract after a grace period. AT&T won approval to compete for civilian agencies' telecommunications work in 2001.

The Defense Information Systems Agency informed GSA Dec. 13 of its decision, which became effective Jan. 1.
