TASC to build app store for spy agency

Under a $25 million contract, TASC will be an app store to speed access to new applications for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency.

TASC has been tapped by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency to build an app store for geospatial intelligence applications that can pass government standards.

The contract is worth $25 million over four years.

NGA wants TASC to manage the business and technical aspects of finding, screening and buying geospatial intelligence app as the so called application operations service provider or AOSP.

NGA is looking for new mobile, web and desktop applications that it can acquire more quickly and cost-effectively. The intelligence agency is adopting a more commercial approach in the hopes of attracting new sources of apps from academia, small businesses and independent developers that wouldn’t normally compete for government contracts, TASC officials said in a statement.

“We hope to generate interest across a broad range of developers and bring NGA innovative products that fully address its security, performance and mission requirements,” said Amanda Brownfield, senior vice president of TASC’s intelligence solutions and analytics sector.

TASC is in the process of being acquired by Engility in a deal valued at $1.1 billion. The acquisition is expected to close in the first quarter.
