HP, Navy claim early NGEN success

The Navy and Hewlett-Packard Co. are hitting some early milestones ahead of schedule as the service transitions from the old Navy-Marine Corps Intranet contract to the new Next Generation Enterprise Network.

According to FCW.com’s coverage of a briefing last week, the Navy and HP said that delays because of bid protests following HP’s contract award pushed back the transition deadline.

But now it looks like the transition will be completed 88 days early. The contract had a 400-day transition period. HP and the Navy expect the transition to NGEN to be completed by December.

Another plus for the $3.5 billion contract is that the Navy claims it is already saving $20 million a month.

NGEN is a massive network support contract that supports 400,000 seats and 800,000 users.

HP was the incumbent on NMCI and won NGEN over Computer Sciences and Harris Corp.
