Northrop Grumman takes on $71M contract for unmanned helicopter

Six more aircraft join the 14 that Northrop will deploy in 2014

Northrop Grumman has won a $71 million contract with the U.S. Navy to produce six Fire Scout unmanned helicopters, adding onto the 14 that the company is already under contract to produce and deploy in 2014.

Ultimately, the Navy plans to purchase a total of 30 aircraft under a rapid development effort, the company said in a release.

"Our entire team is focused on delivering this game-changing capability on time, on cost and with unquestionable quality,” said George Vardoulakis, vice president for tactical unmanned systems with Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems sector.

“Along with our industry partners – Bell, Rolls-Royce, Cubic and others – we are making significant progress in reducing cost, enabling us to achieve our affordability targets and provide the Navy with the absolute best value," he said.
